Becoming Like Christ

Let’s begin today with a definition so we know what we are shooting for. The theological term for the process of becoming like Christ is Sanctification. Wayne Gruden gives this excellent definition,

Sanctification is a progressive work of God and man that makes us more and more free from sin and like Christ in our actual lives.”

This means that as the days, weeks, months, and years of our lives go by we are becoming more and more like Christ in our responses and actions. As sanctification takes place we should be noticing more love for God, love for people, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, self-control, forgiveness, compassion, holiness, and service (Matthew 22:37-39; Galatians 5:22, 23; Colossians 3:12-14; 1 Peter 1:13,14; and Matthew 20:28).

This is the great goal of your life and mine. We are to be transformed from who we are now into what Christ is, much like a caterpillar into a butterfly. Jesus calls this life we are intended to experience “abundant life” (John 10:10).

Can you imagine never struggling with that sin that haunts you? That inferiority complex? That addiction? The constant defensiveness? The duplicity? The Anger? The resentment? The worry? The anxiety?

Can you imagine responding with patience, love, forgiveness, towards the people in your life? Can you imagine responding with calmness and peace to the difficult problem that come at you on any given day? Can you imagine living with a deep sense of purpose and meaning in your life? It’s possible!

What would it be like to be transformed? It would be true joy! John Eldredge wrote that it, “…would be more happiness than most of us ever experience.”

This Blog is about realizing and achieving that life. The life that God intends for us.

At Emmanuel Church of Greenwood we believe that one of the best methods for this type of transformation to take place is through small groups. If you want to find out more about small groups, check out our website.

An Invitation

The purpose of this blog is to help people become like Jesus Christ, who was and is the Son of God. C. S. Lewis ha said, “…the Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs…God became man for no other purpose”

This sentence has changed my life. In this one statement, C. S. Lewis provides an answer to the “why” of living. We are to become like Christ. My intent is to travel this path, to become as much like Christ as I possibly can on this side of heaven. If God became man for no other purpose than to make me and you like His Son, then my intent is to pursue that purpose with all the vigor and energy I have.

If this is your passion as well, and you see what I see, you will enjoy my blog. I intent to challenge myself and all of my readers to pursue Christ-likeness with all their possible strength. I invite you on my journey.
